GUA SHA (FRICTION) THERAPY
Friction Therapy is believed to be used since the Paleolithic or Old Stone Age, since we started using stone tools.
Friction Therapy was once one of the five major treatments in Chinese Traditional Medicine. In the subsequent major extant historical medical text, Gua Sha Therapy was omitted and only four treatment methods were described. But it continued to be used and grew in popularity as a home remedy against many complaints, especially as a preventative measure and treatment before seeking expensive professional help.
Friction Therapy undoubtly has a long history and is the forefather of Acupuncture. It popularity is due to the non-invasive nature and its ease of use. It is used in many countries, like China, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Indonesia etc. Each places have their own name for this treatment.
The therapy is the application of firm even repeated strokes on the body, using a smooth edged hand held instrument.
During the treatment, problematic areas will produce markings in shades of red, which usually fade in 1-4 days. Thereby providing instant relief from long standing pain and stiffness that no other therapy could rival.
This treatment might look painful. But it is, in fact relieving and relaxing.
The Chinese government had been running massive campaign to encourage the use of Gua Sha therapy to create awareness of its benefits, and to reduce the spiraling medical cost of treatment of the country.
Gua Sha therapy is a completely safe and holistic method of treatment. It is a scientific and evidence based method used since antiquity.
